NEW VOICES: PLAYWRITING IN THE SCHOOLS
Sponsored by The Norton
Foundation
New
Voices is a classroom residency for middle and high school students
aimed at teaching the basics of playwriting. Students work with teaching
artists for 7-10 sessions to create original 10-minute plays with an
emphasis on writing rather than production. Finished pieces are often used in student portfolios.
These original works focus
on a wide array of subjects affecting teens, including bullying, body
image and substance abuse, and often reflect their own experiences. New
Voices serves hundreds of students annually, and has given rise to the
Actors Theatre New Voices Ten-Minute Play Contest.
Fee: $1000 (aid available)

NEW VOICES: MONOLOGUE/DIALOGUE
Designed for elementary and middle schools, this classroom residency is aligned with Kentucky Core Content requirements. Students work with
teaching artists for 3-5 sessions to create original monologues and
short scenes. Finished pieces are often used in student portfolios.
Fee: $500 (aid available)
DESIGN-YOUR-OWN WORKSHOP
Teachers may choose from a variety of content areas to create custom classroom workshops specifically designed for the needs of their students. Each workshop involves interactive activities and discussion led by one of our teaching artists.
Choose from one or more: Drama Core Content 101, Be an Actor,
Be a Director, Be a Designer, Be a Playwright.
Available for K-12. Fee: $75 per hour
PEACE BY PIECE
This exciting new program for youth centers and schools is a drama-based
approach to conflict resolution and peace education. Through an explorative
process of creative drama, improvisation and playwriting, young people
can better connect their inner life to outward action, leading to a
greater sense of wholeness and wellbeing. By responding creatively,
young people can imagine real-world implications of expressed ideas
of justice and compassion for themselves and the communities to which
they belong. Peace by Piece is a 10-16 hour classroom (or after-school) residency.
Fee: sliding scale
