APPRENTICE COMPANY
The Acting Apprentice Company provides members with a total immersion into one of the nation's premiere regional theatres and the invaluable opportunity to develop their craft as actors, their skills as collaborators and their knowledge as theatre professionals. An ensemble of 22 actors, Apprentices attend regular classes that include movement, scene study, text analysis, audition technique and community-based theatre. Successful candidates have a unique combination of talent, work ethic, commitment to their art and an interest in actively engaging in the world both within the theatre and outside its walls.

Apprentices participate in master classes with distinguished artists and administrators, including agents, casting directors, guest directors and actors. They observe rehearsals and are given professional audition opportunities. They perform in projects throughout the season and work closely with technical and stage management staff as crew support on mainstage productions. The season concludes with a showcase for industry professionals in New York City.
In recent years, guest artists who have worked with the company include KJ Sanchez of The Civilians, Wendy C. Goldberg of The O'Neill National Playwrights Conference, Greg Allen of The Neo-Futurists, Stephen Webber of SITI Company and Stephen Sapp and Mildred Ruiz of UNIVERSES.

Alumni of the Acting Apprentice Company have worked with such theatre companies as SITI Company, NY; Theatre de la Jeune Lune, MN; The Civilians, NY; Atlantic Theatre Company, NY and New York Neo-Futurists. They have performed at numerous theatres, including The Public Theater, NY; The Kennedy Center, DC; The Goodman Theatre, IL; Trinity Repertory Company, RI; Mark Taper Forum, CA; Milwaukee Repertory Company, WI; Centerstage, MD; Denver Center, CO; and The Shakespeare Theatre, DC.

Apprentices are selected through a highly competitive process that includes an application, audition and interview. These are full-time positions for the entire season (August 12 through mid-May).

The Apprentice Program requires a full-time commitment. There is no possibility for part-time employment during the apprenticeship. We provide a $1,500 stipend to all Apprentices. Cost of living during the program will be $6,000 - $8,000. If you require additional financial assistance, send a statement of your current financial profile, with a statement of any/all relevant information. Include your income tax statements from the past two years. If you receive financial aid at your academic institution, please forward a statement of aid and your tuition fees from your Financial Aid office.



INTERN COMPANY

Professional Interns work directly with department managers and staff, receiving hands-on training in either administration or technical theatre. Internships are available as full-season or part-season contracts, at the discretion of the department. Internships are vital staff positions at this nationally recognized professional theatre acclaimed for its innovative programming and strong business acumen. Interns work directly with department managers and staff, receiving valuable hands-on training in administration or technical theatre. Interns take leadership positions on Apprentice/Intern Company projects throughout the season, and are directly involved in regular season productions.

Interns are selected by application and interview with department managers. It is possible to arrange course credit with the intern’s academic institution.

PLEASE NOTE: Actors Theatre does not charge a fee for intern company membership, nor does it provide a stipend. Each candidate must provide for his or her living, housing and transportation expenses. The theatre and its support group, Actors Associates, provide assistance in finding housing and getting acquainted with the Louisville community.

Apprentice/Intern Company Administration

Excellent opportunity for emerging professionals in arts management and actor training. Assist company directors in producing Apprentice/Intern Company productions. Support recruitment process, including auditions for Apprentice Company. Observe and assist in preparing and teaching classes, as needed. Assist organization and maintenance of high-volume office.

Arts Administration/Company Management
Observe rehearsals, maintain communication with artists, designers and other regional theatres, assist in research and development of specific projects and routine clerical functions. Schedule general audition appointments. Respond to mail or phone inquiries about casting or other employment opportunities, maintaining files and correspondence. Initiate contact with contracted artists, providing hands-on facilitation of all transport and housing requirements. Provide contact to the professional staff with ongoing communication, manage multiple projects and deadlines. Part-season contract available January through beginning of April.

Communications
Gain career entry experience in marketing, public relations, local and national media relations; graphic design and layout of ads, programs, displays and promotional pieces; single ticket and subscription audience development through direct mail, print, broadcast, telemarketing and e-marketing; special events promotion and outreach efforts; write press releases, program copy and promotional material. Hone interpersonal, organizational and analytical skills.

Costumes

Serve as assistants to visiting costume designers, pull rentals, coordinate production paperwork and research. Become an integral part of a resident design/build team. Development
Participate directly in one of the nation's most successful fundraising programs, raising more than $4 million annually. Learn the fundamental skills of building board and donor relations and gain experience in the research, solicitation and acknowledgment of a diverse community of donors - from government grants, foundations and individual contributions to major corporate sponsorship and fundraising events. Summer, semester and season internships are available.

Directing
Immerse yourself in observing some of the finest directors in the country, while assistant directing on 3-4 shows. Get hands-on experience directing scenes, ten minute plays and monologue work with the Acting Apprentices. Meet regularly with the Artistic Director and Associate Artistic Director. Note that this is equal parts directing and observship, so the candidate needs to be far enough along in their development to know how to learn from watching and comparing different directing techniques. Past directors at Actors include: Anne Bogart, Michael John Garcés, Chay Yew and Peter Dubois.

Dramaturgy/Literary Management

Participate in all administrative and artistic aspects of one of the busiest Literary Departments in the country. Conduct research for classical and premiere productions, attend rehearsals, write articles for newsletters and programs and assist on various publication projects. Help evaluate and write reports on submissions of new plays, assist with production dramaturgy and participate in administration of the ten-minute play contest and playwriting workshops. Work in key collaborative positions on Apprentice/Intern Company productions.

Education
Participate in one of Actors’ fastest growing departments! Work with the education staff to be a teaching artist in the classroom and community centers. Learn to develop curriculum as well some administrative duties. Conduct research and work with the Literary Department to compose the season’s Study Guides. Festival Management
The Festival intern position is a full-time commitment January through April for one of the American theatre’s most prestigious new play events. Coordinate events and projects, travel and lodging for national and international guests. Manage volunteers. Produce publications and flyers, coordinate exhibits, merchandise displays and festival events. Valid driver’s license required.

Lighting
Mount and run approximately 25 productions in three spaces. Receive experience and training by working in the support of designs for all productions. Develop electrician and design skills in a high-intensity environment. Opportunities exist to run performances as light board operator and followspot operator. Properties
Work with resident prop designers and artisans on a variety of projects including furniture construction and finishing, welding, reupholstering and soft goods, crafts, painting, paper goods, stock organization and research. Scenic Artistry
Learn about scenic painting techniques and materials. Assist the Scenic Charge or Artist in painting and any other processes to achieve a finished product for each play. Work with resident designers and guest artists on multiple projects. Full and part-season contracts available.

Sound Design
Receive experience and training by working in the support and creation of design for productions. Opportunities exist as sound operator, assistant to the sound engineer, and assistant to the sound designer for regular season, Humana Festival, and design Apprentice/Intern Company productions. Stage Management
Work side by side with Equity stage managers, directors, and actors. Be involved in the entire rehearsal and performance process for mainstage productions. Work with visiting companies and directors. Serve as production stage manager for at least one Apprentice/Intern production. Stage Management Intern positions are a part of the Equity Membership Candidacy program. Technical Direction

This position is designed as a real-time overview of all technical aspects of production in a major regional theatre. Learn to manage multiple shows in rotating rep, research and develop special projects in conjunction with technical management, and construct precision scenery in accordance with design drawings. Experience problem solving strategies in resource management during the world-renowned Humana Festival of New American Plays, and assist in the development, installation and maintenance of scenery while learning to resolve challenges in the mechanical and structural aspects of moving scenery and motion control.
